What Do I Do If I Can't Find the Will?

Posted By Hannah Sargent || 21-Apr-2015

Many families do not know if their loved one has a will or where to look for it unless the decedent has told them.

If the decedent has a safe, lock box or a safety deposit box, these are the first places the family should begin looking. Very often, if the family does not know where the will is located, it is because the decedent did not have one or revoked an old will by destroying it.

There is no reason to delay if you can’t find the will. If there are bills to pay and the personal representative needs to be appointed quickly submit the probate petition. If a will is found at a later date, the petition can always be amended.
